The 2013 Bermuda Motorcycle Racing Club's ('BMRC') National Championship Series commenced on May 5, 2013. The two first events of the season were hosted alongside the Bermuda Karting Club ('BKC') under bright blue Bermuda Skies as summer shined over the Motor Sports Park in Southside, St. Davids.
Event Reviews
The season opener was held on May 5 commencing prompty at 12 noon. The BKC kicked off the event with a set of heats for their clone, tag and shifter classes before the BMRC took the track after 1PM. The BMRC ran six classifications on the day including the GP70, GP80, Scooter 70, Formula Xtreme, GP125 and Superbike classifications. Team Tuned is currently fielding Bruce Degrilla Jr, multi-national champion and three-time GP125 champion, in the GP125 classification. Defending Champion Cyril Whitter III has taken leave from active participation to assist in the administration of the BMRC.
Bruce entered the race on a Honda powered GP125 machine as his Moriwaki 250 four stroke was awaiting gear box parts (Special Thanks to Jordan Fletcher for lending his machinery). The grid was completed by Dakari White, Haley Place and Jazari Caisey. As the flagged dropped a battle ensued as Bruce and Dakari broke away from the rest of the field. Dakari rode a flawless race taking the lead and putting an eventual gap on Bruce to take the first win of the season. Race two saw a direction change in both the race track layout and the race leader. Bruce took the lead during race two and put a margin between Dakari and himself to take the eventual win and leveling the points hual equally across the two riders. Race three saw Dakari take his 2nd and final win of the day leaving Bruce to settle for 2nd place and 2nd place in the championship at the end of the first round.
Round two of the championship was held on Sunday, May 19th alongside the BKC was again. The event was shortened to two race heats from three to allow for family fun events at the end of the event. The GP125 grid grew with the additions of Keanu Wilson and Masala Pace joining the line up.
Bruce lined up on the grid back on his own machinery: the Honda Powered Moriwaki 250 four stroke. During race one Bruce and Dakari once again put distance between themselves and the rest of the field as they battled for first position. Dakari, a rookie in the classification, has raised the level of the classification giving multi-national champion a run for the championship has he not only dominated round one but the first heat of round two. Dakari put a comfortable margin between himself and Bruce and took home the victory. Race two was a much closer battle after a few adjustments were made to the gearing of Bruce's machine. When the flag dropped to start the race Bruce and Dakari commenced an intense wheel-to-wheel battle swapping positions several times a lap over the 12 lap heat. The final lap saw Bruce leading the race only to relinquish the lead on the penaultimate corner when Dakari dived up the inside to take his second win of the event.
Bruce sits in second position overall in the GP125 championship 15 points behind the championship leader. There are 12 events remaining of the 2013 championship and the championship journey has just begun! See a complete list of Team Tuned's race results below:
